`• E%ECUTIVE SIINII+fARY <br />A vegetation inventory was conducted on the Storm King <br />Mines, Inc. permit area during the 1981 field season. The <br />portions of the permit Brea studied (study area) consisted <br />-- of an area proposed for a strip mine and a mine portal for <br />~ an underground mine. Two vegetation types were identified <br />r for each area. Mountain shrub and pinyon-juniper covered <br />23 and 74~, respectively. On the underground portal site, <br />r <br />~. mountain shrub north aspect cover 25~ while big sagebrush <br />- covered 75~ of the area. <br />` Total understory cover for the mountain shrub type <br />averaged 22.7 per quadrat. The average shrub density was <br />8726.4 individuals per acre. Production of the understory <br />`• species in this type was 257.8 lbs/acre. The mountain shrub <br />~- type exhibited the lowest species diversity with sn index <br />i <br />of 2.64• <br />The pinyon-juniper vegetation type averaged 25.2 per <br />y quadrat total understory cover and 292.5 lbs/acre understory <br />1_ production. Average shrub and tree densities were 3548.2 <br />-- and 220.5 individuals per acre, respectively. With an index <br />~- of 3.80 this type had the highest species diversity of the <br />four vegetation types sampled. <br />Understory production and total cover were 91.0 lbs/acre <br />L, and 18.0;6 for the mountain shrub north facing slope vegetation <br />.~ <br />
