`• E%ECUTIVE SIINII+fARY
A vegetation inventory was conducted on the Storm King
Mines, Inc. permit area during the 1981 field season. The
portions of the permit Brea studied (study area) consisted
-- of an area proposed for a strip mine and a mine portal for
~ an underground mine. Two vegetation types were identified
r for each area. Mountain shrub and pinyon-juniper covered
23 and 74~, respectively. On the underground portal site,
r
~. mountain shrub north aspect cover 25~ while big sagebrush
- covered 75~ of the area.
` Total understory cover for the mountain shrub type
averaged 22.7 per quadrat. The average shrub density was
8726.4 individuals per acre. Production of the understory
`• species in this type was 257.8 lbs/acre. The mountain shrub
~- type exhibited the lowest species diversity with sn index
i
of 2.64•
The pinyon-juniper vegetation type averaged 25.2 per
y quadrat total understory cover and 292.5 lbs/acre understory
1_ production. Average shrub and tree densities were 3548.2
-- and 220.5 individuals per acre, respectively. With an index
~- of 3.80 this type had the highest species diversity of the
four vegetation types sampled.
Understory production and total cover were 91.0 lbs/acre
L, and 18.0;6 for the mountain shrub north facing slope vegetation
.~
