i <br /> <br />~.. <br />I-3•x•3 Mountain Shrub <br />- Yorth <br />Facing Slop <br />e <br /> This community is one of two types that occur on the <br />underground portal study area. Due to its lower elevation <br />and northern aspect, this type was separated from the mountain <br />shrub type on the strip mine study area. Species compositions <br />are, in fact, significantly different between one type and <br />the other. <br />~- The soils are characterized by a cobbly or gravelly <br />loam texture and are shallow. The soils series developed <br />r in this t <br />ype were Yormed Yrom sandstone bedrock. <br />The mountain shrub - north facing slope type occupies <br />~,. the uppermost reaches of the underground portal study area. <br />r~ Major shrub species are mountain mahogany, serviceberry, <br />big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata), and a Few scattered <br />r gambel oak and western snowberry individuals. Common <br />understory associates include green needlegrass (5tipa <br />viridula), kentucky bluegrass (Poa gratensis) and <br />r scarlet globemallow (Sphaerallcea coccinea). <br />i <br />L <br />Slopes in this type average 35~ and aspect is north. <br />r <br />`- I-3.1.4 Big Sagebrush <br />This community comprises most of the underground portal <br />study area.
