~ ~ adequate numbers were approached in relation to established
r
confidence intervals.
I-2.2.3 Sampling Adequacy
--- The number of samples required for estimating cover,
production, snd density were determined using the formulas
presente3 in Appendix A. Determination of the actual number
of exclosures to be erected was based on past experience
,.. in similar vegetation types. Sample adequacy attained for
cover, production and shrub and tree density was calculated.
I-2.3 Cover
_ The understory vegetative cover in each vegetation type
`• was visually estimated in a one-meter squared plot. Cover
-- was determined for each herbaceous species (including shrubs
` with less than 1.0 inch stem diameter) by assuming a position
directly over the quadrat and estimating the percent of ground
` surface covered by live, above ground biomass. The remaining
_ area in the quadrat covered by litter-rock in place and bare
ground was also estimated. Cover estimated in this way may
exceed 100 since vegetation layers result in species overlap
over the same ground arcs.
Cover was also estimated for the evaluation of erosion.
_ This estimate is called Total Cover in the tables and is
_.
-7-
