f
~• from a table oP random numbers with 99 as the greatest
possible number. The field operator then paced along the
~.
r y axis (north) the number indicated by the first random
~~ number, turned 90 degrees and paced in a direction parallel
r to the x axis the number indicated by the second random
number. A quadrat was positioned at this point and estimates
r
made.
r Exclosures erected in the spring of 1981 were rectangular
_. in shape, standing approximately two feet high and having
- s rectangular base approximately two Peet wide by Pour Yeet
~- long. 'fielded wire (12.5 gauge, 2 x 4 inch mesh) was cut for
construction oP the exclosure and was secured at each corner
__ with No. 9 baling wire. Two or more 18-inch stakes (3/S inch
;_, rebar) were driven in the ground at the base oP two or more
- sides of the exclosure to help hold the wire against the
ground.
Cover was estimated from a one-meter squared quadrat
_ placed within at the exclosure site. A rectangular quadrat
_ (0.5 meters squared) was placed in the exclosure and was
_ used for production clipping of the understory species. Tree
and shrub density data were also collected at each of these
random points.
By using the above procedures, all areas had an equal
_ chance of being sampled. Random sampling proceeded until
.,
-6-
