I-2.0 METHODS
I-2.1 Vegetation Tvnes
In this study each vegetation type or plant community
- is considered to comprise its own geographic or spatial area
in recurring and recognizable habitats. Communities delineated
within the study area boundaries form a plant 'mosaic'
requiring a detailed analysis for adequate characterization.
Each homogeneous vegetation type was separated by
photointerpretation before analysis was undertaken and was
` inspected in the field for mapping accuracy and possible
inclusions. Delineation of the mapping unite was based on
structural characteristics within the vegetation types present
r
(i.e., shrubs and trees).
r Mapping unit delineation was followed by the drafting
- of the vegetation map on stable mylar, and planimetering
to determine acreages for each type.
I-2.2 Sampling Procedure
I-2.2.1 Study Area Description
For purposes of this study, boundaries were drawn around
` the study areas proposed to be disturbed. The study areas
were 1) the proposed coal strip nine and 2) the underground
portal. Two vegetation types were delineated for each study
.,
-3-
