E:CHIBIT "D"
MINING PLAN
Thi•a operation will be similar to other clay pits southwest
of Calhan in EI Paso County. Topsoil varies from 4-7", and
overburden varies from 2' - 10', with an SCS reported average
of about 2' The clay seam appears to vary from 10'- 20' in
depth.
Notice is hereby given that this. pit will normally be oper-
ated less than 6 months per year, and the operator reque:-.ts
that this not be considered temporary cessation. Rule 1.6.2
states in part: a permit granted pursuant to Rules 2 or 3
shall continue in effect as long as .......... operator has
included in their permit applications, a statement that the
affected lands are to be used for less. than one hundred
eighty (180) days per year."
la) Mining Methods
Mining will start at the south of the area designated as
Phase 1 in the southwest corner. Strips 40'-60' wide, west to
east, and 150' long south to north will be excavated by
scraper, with possibly some dozer or front end loader use.
These strips will keep the expo:;ed area to the minimum. Top-
soil on the first 2 strips will be placed in the buffer zone
on the west next to the fence. Overburden from the first
strip will be stockpiled on the buffer gone east of the top-
soil stockpile. These 2 stockpiles will remain undisturbed
until Phase 1 is entirely excavated. and then will be moved
to the north end to complete backsloping, filling and
topsoiling. The following sequence will be used in the bal-
ance of the mining strips.
1. Topsoil will be stripped and spread on the
2nd previous r_ut.
2. Overburden will be
1st previous cut.
.tripped and spread in the
This keeps the distance to move bath top.oil and overburden
to a minimum, and reclamation is made a part of the mining
operation, rather than being separate cost items. Stockpil-
ing is also eliminated, except for the start of the operation
described above.
Mined clay will be stockpiled on the south end of the mined
area for loading and hauling off site to tFie operator's. brick
plant in Pueblo.
