Due to concerns about blast effects on springs supplying water to <br />reservoirs for the cities of Palisade and Grand Junction, Colorado, rock blasting was prohibited for the <br />excavatinna In a nine-m11e section of the pipe trench an the Grand Mesa. While excavatlnRthe trench in ilia <br />na-blast zone, U. S. Pipeline, lrtc., the contrnutor on Spread No. 2 of this project, encountered many large <br />basalt boulders that could not he removed tvttlt conventional excavating equipment. GEOTEK investigated <br />poundal blast-Induced vibration efTer;ts tin nearby water resources and the reek end ground alopea that <br />housed them. After reviewing specific blasting controls and ground monitoring methods, recommended by <br />GEOTEK, Hydrogeologists representing the area water resources, allowed blasting to occur.
