We ucx~zrstand that considerable site grading •
will be required in this area ::ue to realignment of the river channel
and new highway construction.
SITE CONDITIONS
The site is located within the valley bottom and southern valley
side of the North Fork Gunnison River immediately east of the town of
Somerset. The present entrance to the site is across the existing
bridge to the Bear Mine facilities located at the northwest corner of
the development. The majority of proposed facilities will be located
either an the nearly flat ~ gently sloping valley bottom along the
river or on a higher gently sloping plateau. Separating these twv
areas is a very steep brush-~owered slope apparently formed fran a
resistant sandstone layer. This massive layer is exposed near the •
Bear Mine. Directly tv the south, within the portal area, the ground
surface steepens. A known landslide described by others (IECO
December 1976) is located in this area. We understand that Geo Hydro
Consulting is currently investigating the feasibility of the portal
and roadway construction a¢oss this area. The general topography of
the site with respect to the various proposed and existing facilities
is shown on Figs. 2 and ?A.
Vegetation and ground cover varies considerably from low grasses
and weeds within portions of the valley bottom to dense scrub oak in
the higher plateau areas. Considerable clearing and grading of the
higher plateau area was requirrs3 for drill rig access. Near the
existing Bear Mine, the ground s~face is generally devoid of
