• Table 26, Ground Cover Mixes, represents WFC's revised mix for the
New Elk Mine. WFC's proposed postmining land use for the New Elk are
rangeland and wildlife habitat. Wildlife habitat is divided into two
habitat types, riparian and upland. The basic rangeland mix will be used
in all seedings. As shown in Table 26, additional species are added to the
rangeland mix for each of the habitat types. WFC is proposing the revised
rangeland mix because it has been successful on revegetation of the side
slopes of the Purgatoire River diversion. To supplement the rangeland seed
mix for upland wildlife habitats, WFC will transplant relatively equal
amounts of trees/shrubs indicated in Table 26, representing approximately
1,500 trees/shrubs/acre. This planting density will apply for the refuse
disposal area, water tank benches and access roads. To supplement the
rangeland seed mix for riparian wildlife habitats, WFC will transplant
willows and cottonwoods on 5 foot centers. This standard will apply for
the prep plant and ponds 004, 006 and 007 areas.
Seeding methods will include drilling, broadcasting and
• transplants. Drilling will be acoortq~lished on slopes less than 3H:1V.
Broadcasting will be accomplished on steeper slopes with mechanical
broadcasters, hand broadcasters or by hydroseeding. idiere the broadcast
seeding method is utilized, seeding rates will be doubled. WFC was very
pleased with the hydroseeding efforts on the Middle Fork diversion and
refuse area dam and slopes. In addition, we observed significantly mere
germination and less erosion in areas where slopes were left in a roughened
condition.
Mulching will include either application of straw or hay mulch at
a rate of 2 tons/acre. Straw or hay will be crimped after application.
WFC will also utilize hydrocmrlching at an equivalent rate of straw or hay
mulch.
No irrigation is planned for the land uses proposed during the
permit term. However, it is conceivable after closing the New Elk
facilities, flood irrigation may occur on the rangeland adjacent to the ~~~
. Middle Fork of the Purgatoire River. ~, 1~
2.05-49 (Revised 11/14/88)
~~
