UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE
SOIL CONSERVATION SERVICE
San Miguel County gravel pits - Page 2
February 15, 1979
Again this is more of a quarry-type operation, and I feel little can be
done with the side slopes. I have not noticed any soil material that
was set aside for surfacing.
Because of the snow cover, I was unable to make any estimate of the
present vegetation on any of the sites except Troy Rosec, fIowever
I am including a copy of the potential native vegetation for each of the sites.
In my opinion the Norwood airport and Egnar pits xould be similar to the
vegetation found under a Pinyon-Juniper Woodland aspect. The Basin pit
would reflect the lower extremes o£ the Loargy Foothill range site.
- Potential forage production would be somewhat lower than a typical
Loamy Foothills sits. Ttte Troy Rose pit xould be sinular vegetatively
to a Semi-Desert Loam range site in very low condition due to past
over-use. The Appl~:bauge pit could be classed as a Riverbottom
vegetative site.
In revegetation, gr~:ater success can be expected if the disturbed
areas are shaped an~9 graded, and covered with soil material to at least
a depth of 6 to 8 inches. We xould recommend late fall seeding on all
sites to take advantage of available spring moisture and less weed
competition. I recommend the following broadcast seeding rates for
mixtures: Egnar, Basin and Norwood airport sites -- Vinall Russian
wildrye - 6 pounds ;per acre; Nordan crested wheatgrass - 6 pounds per
acre; Amur intermedwate wheatgrass - ]1i pound:, per acre, Applebaugh site --
Sodar streambank wheatgrass - 8 pounds per acre; Manchar smooth brome -
10 pounds per acre; Latar orchardgrass - 4 pounds per acre. Troy Rose site --
Sand dropseed - $ pounds per acre; Paloma Indian ricegrass - 12 pounds per
acre.
I am also including a copy of a general soils map of the Dolores River
Basin for your use, I hope this information will be of help to you.
Sincerely,
Ch~~~ /
District Conservationist
Soil Conservation Service
iJorwood, Colorado
,, o
~.
