San, Miguel County gra*rel pits - Mine 'Reclamation - Page 2
Sites Ldith Completed Excavation:
,~}~ Cougar Hill - This pit is located on (36) Unnamed 36-Rock Outcrop complex
(Unnamed 36 fraction;, There is a stockpile of soil material for surfacing,
The vegetation is tyx~ical of Pinyon-Juniper Woodland. The erosion hazard
is moderate to severe because of slope and sandy loam soil texture,
#7 Hamilton Mesa - Thais site is on (%65) Uracca-Cerro gravelly loam soil
association (Uracca fraction), There is a good stockpile of soil material
for topsoiling purposes, Plants are representative of higher elevation
Pinyon-Juniper Woodlar..d, Good results can be expected from reseeding. The
site is potentially more erosive than others because of higher precipitation
and steeper slopes.
~ll Broad Canyon - This pit is located on (y00) Rock Outcrops-Torriorthents
map unit, 'there is quite a bit of soil material mixed with rock fragments in
the excavated pit, It will be quite difficult to separate the topsoil and
rock. I suggest that the large boulders be pushed to one side, and the
remainder be graded and shaped for reseeding, There is a good stand of native
plants adjacent to the oit, and it appears the pit is reestablishing itself
rapidly. Plants are typical of Pinyon-Juniper 4oodland,
i~5 tliramonte - T°ne soil. on this site has not been classified. It is shale
derived with 8 to 10 inches of heavy clay surface and numerous shale chips
scattered on the surface. There is no stockpile of topsoil material although
the site has been shaped and graded to some degree. There is some interest
in converting this pit t~~ additional recreation/camp sites for the hliramonte
Recreation Area. I feel this comrersion should be encouraged. The site has
a moderate erosion hazard because o£ soil texture,
Acti~re and Proposed Pits:
r3 Sam Hankins - The soil on this site has only a tentative classification,
'111e description shoi~rs there to be 10 inches of loam surface soil, Sandstone
bedrock occurs at about 33 inches. The site is located in a natural drainage-
way, and has high potentiail for conversion to a stockwater pond, The con-
version should be encouraged, although the soil material will have to be placed
over the rock bottom to reduce seepage losses, The plants are representative
of Loart1Y Foothills range site, and the area has high potential for reseeding.
~1 Hoger Williams - This p:Lt is situated on (66D) Cerro cobbly loam, There
is some soil material whicki has been set aside for topsoiling. The site is
potentially Pinyon-Juniper Woodland, Adjacent areas have been converted
to non-irrigated pasture, ~~Jith topsoil replaced this pit has high potential
for conversiott to dry pasture. Erosion hazard is slight.
X12 Beaver Mesa - The soils on this site have not been classified, rlY field
inspection of the test pit :showed there to be 10 to 18 inches of soil
material that could be removed fairly easily for topsoiling. The vegetation
is transitional to Subalpine Loam range site, There are very favorable
growing conditions and good revegetation results can be expected, The
erosion hazard is slight,
