LTA COMMERCIAL TESTING & ENGINEERINGCO.
~VIETHODS
A Preliminary Toxicity Identification evaluation was conducted with effluent from Mountain
Coal Company. An effluent grab sample was collected on November 18, 2002, stored on ice,
and delivered to Commercial Testing and Engineering, Co. (CT&E) on the following day. The
effluent sample was received at a temperature of 9.0 ° C and assigned CT&E sample tracking
number 072-3757-001. The Initial Toxicity test was initiated approximately 24 hours after
sample collection. The characterization tests were initiated approximately 48 hours after sample
collection and 24 hours after sample manipulation.
Testing was conducted in accordance with the most recent protocols specified by the Water
Quality Control Division of the Colorado Department of Health (1998) and with reference to the
EPA's Methods for Aquatic Toxicity Identification Evaluatioru. Phase I Toxicity
Characterization Procedures. (EPA/600/3-88/034 September 1988).
Basic characteristics of the etlluent and dilutions were measured as follows:
Characteristic Method/E ui ment EPA Method
Alkalinity
Chlorine, Total Residual
Conductivity
Dissolved Oxygen
Hazdness
pH
Temperature
Titrimetric (APHAt, 1989)
LaMotte STC-Cl Colorimeter
Oakton CON 500 Cond.
