• i
reviewing the design for the stream crossing to ensure that the fisheries resource is protected. In
addition, Tallahassee Creek can produce significant flows during high rainfall events. We would
strongly encourage DMG review haul road design to ensure it does not contribute significant
quantities of sediment to the downstream fisheries.
The application indicates that no topsoil placement and subsequent revegetation will occur on the
quarry benches. DOW would encourage DMG and the applicant to review this portion of the plan
to determine the feasibility for revegetation of the quarry benches. Successfiil revegetation would
provide a benefit to wildlife
It appears that no sediment controls will be provided for the Granite Quarry. DOW would
encourage DMG to examine whether the Granite Quarry has the potential to contribute significant
quantities of sediment to Tallahassee Creek and the downstream fishery. If such potential exists,
we would recommend that DMG require the applicant to provide sediment control structures as
appropriate.
Sandstone Quarry
The application indicates that an access road across Tallahassee Creek will be constructed to
service the Sandstone Quarry. We would offer the same comments with regazd to fisheries
protection as suggested previously (see Granite Quarry).
General Comments
As noted to the applicant during the site visit, Tallahassee Creek through the permit azea is
severely degraded. Any efforts to rehabilitate the riparian azea would greatly improve the overall
health ofthe environment on the site. If the DOW could be of any assistance in such an effort,
please let us know.
The Division of Wildlife appreciates the opportunity to provide input on reducing potential
wildlife impacts. As always, we look forwazd to continuing our cooperative efforts with DMG in
environmental protection. Ifyou have any questions concerning these comments, please give me a
call at (719) 561-4909.
Sincerely,
Chris Kloster
Habitat Biologist
CDOW; Pueblo
cc: Finch, CDOW; Bill Fehr, Agile Stone; Goforth, CDOW; Desilet, CDOW
