For comment, DOW reviewed the
applicant's Conditional Use Permit application to Fremont County. Jn addition, a site visit was
conducted with the applicant on 15 Aug 97. DOW offers the following comments and
recommendationstyith respect to minimizing potential wildlife impacts.
Gravel Bar Aggregate Pit
Accordmg to the application, The Gravel Bar Aggregate Pits aze located adjacent to and south of
Tallahassee Creek. Berms will be constructed to protect Tallahassee Creek from uncontrolled
runoff In addition to berms, DOW would encourage the establishment of an undisturbed buffer
area between the creek (e.g. the north edge of the upper bank terrace) and the berms. We would
also encourage the re-seeding of exposed soils on the berms to avoid possible sediment entering
the creek.
During the site visit, the species fist for the revegetation plan was briefly reviewed. The plan
specified the use of fourwing saltbush (Atriplex canescens) as a woody component included with
the grass mix. We would encourage using one of the following species, Rhus trilobata, Rtbes spp.,
or Amelanchier spp., instead of fourwing saltbush because of their increased benefit to wildlife.
Granite Quarry
The application indicates that a haul road across Tallahassee Creek will be constructed to service
the Granite Quarry. DOW aquatic sampling data indicates that a reproducing brown trout
population exists upstream ofthe permit area. In order to protect brown trout spawning, DOW
would strongly recommend that the haul road crossing Tallahassee Creek be designed so that fish
passage and spawning activity will not be impacted. DOW would be keenly interested in
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, James S. Lochhead, Executive Director
WILDLIFE COMMISSION, Arnold Salazar, Chairman • Rebecca L.
