2.05.3 (6) OVERBURDEN
Approximately 22,000 cubic yazde of overburden were removed for
the Animas Mine portals, and shop building. The excavated
material was used to fill azouad the main diversion culvert and
the remainder was spread out oa the bench area. Exhibit D Cross
Sections show the volumes removed from the portal area and their
subsequent storage oa the beach area. Exhibit E shows a detailed
cross section of the overburden storage area.
During ongoing mine operation, non-combustible fill will be
needed to cover the refuse pile to a depth of 3.5 feet. This
material will be obtained from the bench azea as shown on Cross
Sections G-G' through I-I' contained in Exhibit D, Disturbed Area
Cross Sections. The overburden and topsoil will be placed oa the
refuse as soon as each lilt is completed.
At the point when the refuse covers the beach azea, overburden to
cap the refuse will be obtained from the currently undisturbed
portion of the planned final refuse area. This material is
located primazily along the old highwall areas north sad east of
the current refuse disposal area. Once the topsoil is stripped
from these azeae, overburden will be removed as necessazy to
cover the remaining refuse azeas. The approximate locations and
depths of non-toxic, non-combustible overburden material aze
shown on Cross Sections Al-A1' through J-J' in Exhibit D,
Disturbed Area Cross Sections.
When the bench area ie covered by refuse, approximately 12.6
acres of refuse azea will need to be covered with 3.5 feet of
overburden. The additional refuse area to be disturbed is 6.7
acres.
Thus, if the additional refuse azea is stripped to as average
overburden depth of 6.9 feet, adequate cover will be provided for
the entire refuse area. Refer to Exhibit D, Disturbed Area Cross
Sections.
458
Revised 1/88
