2.05.3 (6) OVERBURDEN
• Approximately 22,000 cubic yards of overburden were removed for
the Animas Mine portals, and shop building. The excavated
material was used to fill around the main diversion culvert and
the remainder was spread out on the bench area. Exhibit D Cross
Sections show the volumes removed from the portal area and their
subsequent storage on the bench area. Exhibit E shows a detailed
1
cross section of the overburden storage area.
During ongoing mine operation, non-combustible fill will be
needed to cover the refuse pile to a depth of :.5 feet. This
material will be obtained from the bench area from Crass Sections
n
D-D' through J-J'. The overburden and topsoil will be placed on
the refuse as soon as each lift is completed.
At a point approximately midway between the second and third 50
foot lift, the refuse will cover the bench area. At this point,
overburden to cap the refuse must be obrtained from the
additional refuse area that has not yet been disturbed. Once the
topsoil is stripped from a portion of the area, overburden will
be removed as necessary to cover subsequent lower lifts.
When the bench area is covered by refuse, approximately 23_5
acres of future refuse area will need to be covered by 3.5 feet
of overburden. The additional refuse area to be disturbed is
17_6 acres.

458
