Page 2 <br />ace Stabilization <br />In order to determine the rate of weathering on the exposed bedrock, CMLRD <br />requested that additional laboratory testing be conducted. Swell <br />consolidation tests were conducted, and the test results have been <br />incorporated into the report. The results indicate a swell between 3% <br />and 6%. <br />To minimize erosion on the slope above the road and on the pond slope, <br />runoff must be kept to a minimum. It was suggested that a diversion ditch <br />be constructed above the road cut. Normally, this would be a viable <br />method to prevent runoff from traveling across the exposed bedrock slope, <br />but in this case, the ditch would be of little benefit. Currently, a <br />topsoil stockpile, catchment basin and road exist above the road cut. The <br />road to the stockpile acts as a diversion ditch, routing water to either <br />the catchment basin or proposed culvert F3. If a diversion ditch were <br />constructed, it would only collect less than one acre of runoff area. <br />In order to minimize the amount of runoff traversing the pond side slope <br />(exposed bedrock) a berm ditch will be created above the slope. Positive <br />flow in the ditch will be maintained to the west at approximately 5% <br />grade. The toe of the slope will be subject to, wave action and water <br />table fluctuations. To minimize detrimental effects and reinforce the <br />toe, rock will be placed at the toe of the side slope excavation. <br />Should the above methods prove insufficient in retarding erosion, Peabody <br />will initiate other erosion control methods, subject to prior approval by <br />the Division. <br />Material Removal and Disoosal <br />The slide material will be removed with dozers and scrapers. Dozers will <br />cut the slope face down and the material will be picked up by scrapers at <br />the toe of the pond side slope. Material will be picked up in this manner <br />until conditions become too wet to load the material with conventional <br />equipment. Rock laterals will be constructed from seep areas encountered <br />during excavation. It is estimated that between 15,000 cy and 20,000 cy <br />of material will be moved during the excavation of slide materials and <br />road realignment. Once the slide material has been removed, the slope <br />face will be rocked as noted above, at the contact between the face and <br />the water line. The rock will extend above and below the principal <br />spillway elevation. <br />Excavated material will be temporarily stored in the waste stockpiles to <br />the east of Pond 006. These stockpiles will be seeded to minimize <br />erosion. The final disposition of these piles will be haulage to a final <br />open pit. <br />
