S A11en Mine
~J
Drainage and Sediment Control Plan
Surface water at the Allen Mine is controlled by a system of
diversion structures and sedimentation control devices. The
system is designed with two separate objectives. First the
storm runoff from areas undisturbed by mining is diverted to
keep it out of the disturbed surface areas before reporting
to the Purgatorie River. The second system controls runoff
silting through sedimentation ponds, and by the surfacing of
small areas with cleaned gravel to prevent excessive
silting.
All engineering work was done using accepted practices
with Hydrology and Sedimentology of Surface Mined Lands by
Haan and Barfield as guideline. Publications by the Soil
Conservation were also used in the engineering design of the
system.
Drainage Areas Undisturbed by Mining
Runoff from the undisturbed areas around the mine site is
channeled through various ditches and made to report into
the Purgatorie River. Runoff from the hillside south of the
mine site is diverted around the disturbed areas towards the
east and the west from a point due south of the office
3
