A listing of terrestrial species known or expected <br />to occur in the quarry sites area was prepared for the area <br />by the Colorado Division of wildlife in September 1977. See <br />Attachment #5. <br />No significant changes are believed to have occurred <br />in the mammal and bird species lists for this area since <br />1977. <br />The area between Oasis and No Name Creeks is mule <br />deer winter range. A few deer remain on the winter range <br />from October or November until early April and then gradually <br />move to higher elevations as snow melts and new vegetative <br />growth becomes available. They summer on the Flat Tops just <br />to the north of this area. <br />The lower limit of elk winter range extends about <br />halfway down the ridge and they use the area in midwinter <br />only in years of greater than normal snow depths at higher <br />elevations. <br />The area immediately north of the proposed sites <br />is black bear habitat. Black bear commonly wander to lower <br />elevations in late fall and early spring in search of food <br />and may use the pinyon-juniper habitat type. <br />Species composition is typical of the oak brush, <br />pinyon-juniper, and mountain shrub habitat types. Common <br />species include cottontail rabbits, several species of <br />squirrels, chipmunks, mice, coyotes, and porcupines. <br />Mourning doves are the most common game birds <br />occurring throughout the area during the summer months. <br />Chukars are also found throughout the area, most frequently <br />using rocky slopes and patches of annual cheatgrass.
