minimize the introduction of particulate matter into tr.e
ambient air caused by the truck traffic. The short ham=
road, with a verticle drop of less than 600 feet, greatly
improves the economics of the operation.
Alternative #1 - Take no action
This alternative would result in the loss of a high
grade limestone source in this part of the state. After one
more season of operating the present quarry, it would be
closed down and reclamation of the disturbed areas would
commence.
Although the environmental aspects of this alternative
are obviously favorable over the others, the expense of
importing limestone from the eastern slope of Colorado, or
even from further locations, would increase mining costs in
this area which are already economically marginal. The
relatively small impact on the environment of the area from
the operation of a limestone quarry is easily offset by the
economic advantage of having one in this area. The Company
limestone operation in the Glenwood Springs-Carbondale area
provides full time employment for 8 persons and summer
employment for 11 more.
Alternative #2 (Labeled "2" on the map)
This alternative would be the expansion of the present
quarry site to include a new limestone outcrop approximtely
500 yards to the southeast. No more high grade limestone
can be quarried at the present location without removing an
