~ 't
EXHIBIT F
Mid-Continent Resources, Inc.
P. O. Box 158
Carbondale, CO 81623
ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT
of
MID-CONTINENT LIMESTONE QUARRY
Section I
Purpose of and Need for Action
Mid-Continent Resources, Inc. has been operating a
limestone quarry at a site approximately 1~ miles northeast
of Glenwood Springs since 1974. The previous owners had
operated the quarry for at least 20 years before it was
purchased in 1973 by Mid-Continent Coal and Coke Company,
an affiliate of Mid-Continent Resources, Inc. The operation
has consisted of quarrying, crushing and hauling out by
truck 20,000 to 50,000 tons of crushed limestone each year.
Most of the stone goes to the Company's limestone plant near
Carbondale where it is pulverized and used for rockdusting
in coal mines to prevent the accumulation of explosive coal
dust. The only high quality limestone in this area is along
the southern rim of the Flat Tops north of the Colorado
river from about Dotsero to Mitchell Creek. Access to most
of it is extremely difficult or environmentally unacceptable.
Only one more year's production at the present quarry
is feasible within acceptable economic and environmental
conditions of the operation. These will be elaborated upon
in the following sections of this assessment as continued
utilization of this site is investigated as one of the
alternatives.
