<br />UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT .OF AGRICULTURE <br />Soil Conservation Service <br />Colorado <br />Standard <br />Definition <br />S?ANDARD AND SPECIFICATIONS <br />Mulching.(Code 484) <br />TECHNICAL GUIDE <br />Section IV <br />December, 1976 <br />Applying plant residues or other suitable materials not produced on the <br />site to the soil surface. <br />Purpose <br />To conserve moisture; prevent surface compaction or crusting; reduce <br />runoff and erosion; control weeds; and help establish plant cover. <br />Where applicable <br />On soils subject.to erosion on which low-residue-producing crops, such <br />as grapes and srmall Pruits,are grown; on critical areas;•and on soils <br />that have a~low infiltration rate. <br />SPECIFICATIONS <br />A. General <br />1. The area shall be relatively smooth and free of gullies or drifts. <br />2. Mulching material shall be applied immediately before or after <br />seeding unless seed is applied with mulch. When stabilizing sandy <br />soils it is recomm:nded that seeding x311 be done after mulch <br />application to prevent seeding too deep. <br />B. Straw or Hay Mulch <br />1. The material will be grass hay or cereal grain straw. (Both <br />referred to as atrax in these apecificat#ons) <br />2. The normal rate of application shall be 4,000 lbs/Ac of air dry <br />material. <br />3. At least 50$ of the mulch by xeight shall be 10 inches or more <br />in length. <br />4. The straw will be free of noxious weeds. <br />5. Mulch Anchoring-apply immediately after distributing straw. <br />Page 1 of 2 <br /> <br />
