In any event, once mining activity is crn~lete, the ground should be shaped so
that no slopes exceed 5:1. Following this, topsoil should be replaced to a depth of
at least 6 inches. If there is not enough topsoil at the site then more will have to
be brought in to make up the difference.
Prior to seeding it is important that the ground be clean tilled and well prepared
for drilling. If the seeding is done immediately after replacement of topsoil then
little, if any, seedbed preparation will be needed. If, however, seeding is postponed
for a period of time and the ground crusts over or weeds become established it will be
necessary to disk once or twice to break up the surface crust and remove any weed
cong~etition. At this time, nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer should be applied at the
rate of 50 lbs/ac each (net application)
The following seeding reeamiendation is based on several factors: 1)It is assumed
that the reclaimed area will revert back to it's previous use of livestock grazing
land, 2)Those species either currently growing on the site or that have the best
potential for growing on the site and which are most easily established and readily
available will be selected, and 3)Forb and shrub species that are normally found on the
site will not be included in the seeding recannendation as they do not have the erosion
control qualities of grass, they are more difficult to establish, they are ~re expensive
and, considering the limited size of the reclaimed area, will most likely became well
established on their own within a relatively short time span.
Species recorm~ended to revegetate this area along with variety, percent of mixture
and total pounds PIS are as follows:
SPDCIES VARIEPY P13tCENT POUNDS PLS*
Western Wheat Arriba 50 8.0/ac.
Arizona fescue Redondo 30 1.4/ac.
Blue grams Covington 20 0.6/ac.
10.0 lbs/ac. PIS
*PLS=Pure Live Seed: Determined by multiplying percent purity X percent ge*+n~~ation. In
order to equal SO lbs/ac PIS, 12 to 15 pounds of bulk seed quantity will most likely
have to be planted. ee sure to specify pounds PIS when purchasing seed mixture.
Seeding should be done at one of the following times. In the fall after the first
heavy frost when the ground is sufficiently cold enough to prevent any germination
before the next spring, probably after Oct. 15th. In the spring prior to expected
more
