United States
Department of
Agriculture
Mr. William Tezak
Colorado Quazries
P.O. Box 1389
Canon City, CD. 81212
Dear Bill,
Soil
Conservation June 8, 1987
Service 783-2981
The following is information which you requested conoerning the reclamation of
a mining operation located in the W'~NE}I~'.} Sec. 26, T225, R72W, 6th Principle
Meridian, Custer County, Colorado.
Soils in this area consist of Woodhall-Bogert extremely cobbly sandy loams with
5 to 20 percent slopes. Included in this description are inclusions of Lattiphier loam
on foot slopes and rock outcrops on ridges.
The Wbodttall soil makes up approximately 50 percent of this soil unit and the
Bogert about 40 percent. The Woodhall is moderately deep and well drained. It formed
in residuum and colluvium from granite, has a surface layer that is dark grayish-
brown extremely cobbly sandy loam 6 inches thick and a subsoil that extends to a depth
of 28 inches. Granite bedrock is at a depth of 28 inches and the soil is slightly acid.
The Bogert soil is shallow and well drained forming in residuum primarily from
granite. The surface layer is grayish brown extrelrely cobbly sandy loam SO inches
thick, the substratum is brown extremely gravelly sandy loam 5 inches thick and
granite bednxk is at a depth of 15 finches. This soil also is slightly acid.
The native potential vegetation for this site includes Arizona fescue, western
wheat, needleandthread, prairie Junegrass, bottlebrush squirreltail, blue grams,
mutton bluegrass, elk sedge, fringed sage, rabbitbrush, lupine, penstemon, paintbrush,
hairy goldaster and sulfur-flowered buckwheat to name those species that are most
commnly encountered. I have enclosed a list of species currently existing on the site
as jaell as a condition score for a shallow loam range site.
At the time of this plan's development, surface mining activity has been taking
place for a considerable number of years. Prelinunan urau irra*y observations indicate that there
is some topsoil remaining on the site but whether or not it is enough for reclamation
purposes is difficult to tell.
more
0 T~~ SoY DONQVfrlldl S/rvlo~
V I~ ~n ~p~noY of M~
Dtlputm~nl of Aprkullun
