Roan Creek is sampled quarterly regardless of flow in the unnamed tributary, and at a monthly
frequency when station UN-1 is flowing.
2.4 DATA COLLECTION PROCEDURES
This plan for surface water monitoring includes water-quality sampling and measurement of
stream dischazge. Standard methods for the collection of surface water samples aze provided
in the National Handbook of Recommended Methods for Water Data Acquisition (I1SGS,
1977). Accepted methods for measurement of stream dischazge aze provided in Dischazge
Measurements at Gaging Stations (USGS, 1973). These two references provide the basis for
data collection methodology in to this plan.
Specific data collection methodology aze summarized in Appendices A and B. Appendix A
includes Sample Handling and Documentation procedures to be followed. Appendix B
includes alternative methods for measuring stream dischazge. The following subsections
briefly describe the data wllection procedures to be followed for this plan.
2.4.1 Sampling Sequence
Samples will be collected in downstream sequence. Pipeline station P-1 will be sampled first,
followed by collection of sample Pond-1. Samples from Roan Creek station RC-1 will be
collected followed by station RC-2.
2.4.2 Sampling and Measurement Location
Water samples and dischazge measurements will be collected at the same general location at
the same time. Water samples should be collected first, followed by measurement of
discharge. Water samples are collected first to reduce the potential for sample disturbance.
Agitation of the pipe or channel sediments prior to sample collection will be avoided. Samples
wilt be collected by carefully submerging the appropriate analytical quality sample bottle in the
water flowing from the stream/opening without disturbing or entraining sediment. If
necessary, a separate analytical quality container may be used to collect the water and transfer
it into the appropriate sample bottle. Caze will be taken to assure that the most representative
sample possible is collected.
13
