~~
lla--Castner gravelly loam 0 to 9 percent slopes. This shallow
somewhat excessively drained soil is on rolling uplands and
bedrock-controlled benches. It formed in residuum from sandstone.
Surface stoniness constitutes 20 percent. Slopes are plane to slightly
convex. Areas are irregular in shape and are 1 to 10 acres in size.
The vegetation is mainly shrubs. Elevation ranges from 6600 to 6800
feet. The average annual precipitation is about 14 inches and the mean
annual air temperature is about 42°F.
Typically the surface layer is brown gravelly loam about 3 inches
thick. The substratum is dark extremely gravelly loam about 6 inches
thick which is underlain by hard sandstone at a depth of 9 inches.
Included in mapping this unit is about 10 percent Savage soils
and about 5 percent Evanston shallow Variant soils. Also included
are small areas of soils similar to Castner except that they have less
than 35 percent coarse fragments and they overlie weathered rock.
Permeability of the Castner soil is moderate. Available water
capacity is low. Effective rooting depth is 9 inches. Runoff is medium
and hazard of erosion by both water and wind is slight.
This unit is used for grazing, wildlife, and watershed.
The soils of this map unit provide a poor source of topsoil to
an average depth of 9 inches. The major limitation is a high content
of coarse fragments.
1~
2-274
