16e--Shambo shallow Variant loam, 30 to 49 percent slopes. This
moderately deep well drained soil is on upland sideslopes. It formed in
residuum from interbedded shale and sandstone. Surface stoniness con-
stitutes about 10 percent. Slopes ate plane to slightly convex. This
unit is irregular in shape and is 80 acres in size. The vegetation is
mainly a dense cover of shrubs. Elevation ranges from 6,725 to 6,960
fee[. The mean annual precipitation is about 14 inches and the average
annual air temperature is about 42°F.
Typically the surface layer is brown loam about 7 inches thick.
The substratum is light yellowish brown shaly clay about 18 inches
[hick. This horizon is underlain by weathered shale at a depth of 25
inches. This bedrock material crushes to a texture of shaly clay.
Included in mapping are about 10 percent Evanston shallow Varian[,
about 5 percent Grail Taxadjunc[ and about 5 percent Coberly Variant
soils.
Permeability of this Shambo'soil is moderate to a depth of 7 inches
as is the available water capacity. Below this depth permeability is
moderately slow to slow and available water capacity is low. Effective
rooting depth is 25 inches. Runoff is medium and Che hazard of erosion
by water is moderate. Erosion hazard by wind is slight.
The soils of this map unit provide a good source of topsoil to an
average depth of 7 inches. Below [his depth, a significant amount of
shale fragments and clay textures make rite substratum horizons undesir-
able as [opdressing materials.
.~
2-273
