BET7GER SAND AND GRAVEL CO.
Soils and vegetative information on C. Hogue ranch for gravel pit.
A. Climate -- Precipitation averages 20 to 25 inches per year. Over
half of it comes as snow. The optimum growing season is May 15
to July 15.
B. Elevation and Topography -- The proposed gravel pit occurs at an
elevation of approximately 6700 feet. 'Phe natural slopes vary
from 9 to 1G percent.
C. The northern part of the site is found on a Bulkley silty clay
loam. The part of the site south of the fence ie as old exca-
vated area which has had moat of the topsoil removed. The
only topsoil that cea be described is the Bulkley silty clay
loam. The Bulkley soil series consists of deep, well drained
soils formed on fine textured material derived from shale. The
surface soil is clay loam about 8 inches thick. The subsoil is
clay material about 22 inches thick. The under]ying materiel is
a calcariaus clay. The depth to hardpan or bedrock is greater
than 60 inches. The depth to seasonal high vatertable is greater
than 6 feet. The pH of the soil profile ranges from 7.4 to 8.4.
The conductivity of the soil profile is negligible (less than
2 mmhoa/cm at 25° C).
• D. Plant Community -- There are two distinct plant communities on
the appllcation area. The area north of the fence is non-irri-
gated pasture. Intermediate wheatgraes, along with timothy
and smooth bromegrass make up 85$ of the production by dry weight.
Other plants found in this pasture are big sagebrush, Kentucky
bluegrass, dandelion, western yarrow, and a few annual weeds.
The ground cover was estimated to be 1800 pounds of air dry
forage per acre. The area south of the Pence is mostly in nn
old excavation. The plants are mostly weeds such as Canada
thistle, Russian thistle, cheatgrass, taxxeed, prostrate knotreed ,
and dandelion. There is some western wheatgrass, big sagebrush,
rabbitbrush, and s very small amount of sweetclover. 'Phe ground
cover density is about 10'b, with production being about 200 pounds
per acre. There is a small wet area on the southern boundary of
the area. The vet area is also in old excavation; the plants found
in it are cattails, rushes, and sedges.
