III. WATER CONTROL MEASURES
The waste disposal area shows no subsurface water sources such as seeps,
springs, etc. Exploratory drilling throughout the mine site has not indi-
• Gated any subsurface water. For this reason, no subsurface drainage is an-
ticipated as necessary for the waste disposal area.
The waste disposal area drainage will be controlled as follows. The waste
disposal area topography varies greatly. It is divided into a few major
drainage channels and several smaller channels. The disposal area is being
developed to minimize surface disturbance. Only the small area required at
the time is cleared and ready for waste disposal. The large drainage chan-
nels are diverted around the waste site. The diversion ditches will be de-
signed following the requirements of 30 CFR 817.72(d) and constructed to
divert the 100-year, 24-hour storm. The runoff from small watersheds is
diverted around the waste site using berms built up from the original
clearing and development of the site, which is simply a flattened out area.
The site has a built up berm on the outside side that helps trap immediate
sediment and to ease the unloading of waste materials.
After a certain site has been used, backfilled, and compacted, the waste
disposal site is enlarged to accommodate new material. During this en-
largement the existing watershed channels are diverted as required. This
is required to assure sufficient runoff and sediment control within the
varying topography. Slope protection is provided to the small areas dis-
turbed through the annual revegetation efforts. The final reclaimed slope
will be revegetated as described in the revegetation plan.
The only water discharged from the waste disposal area is •rainfall runoff.
This runoff is directed to sedimentation ponds located immediately below
the waste disposal site.
IV. CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS
Surface rainfall runoff is diverted around the waste disposal site as shown
on Map 46. The runoff ie directed to sedimentation ponds so possible
effluent meets the limitations of 4817.42. The material is to be placed in
~. such a manner as to ensure stability through proper preparation,
construction, and inspection. The waste disposal area will be revegetated
and reclaimed so as to be compatible with the existing natural
surroundings.
