•
roadway. Straight portions of the road were crowned about 6 inches in the
middle, allowing water to drain to both sides, and turns and switchback areas
were graded to direct surface to the inside ditch. A berm of at least 3.5 feet
in height, with 1 to 1.5 vertical-to-horizontal slopes, was constructed along
all outslopes to provide safety during wet periods and winter months.
The haul road surface, consisting of 16 inches of pit-run, sub-base
r1
U
•
material and 8 inches of 0.75-inch minus road-base material, was obtained from
W. R. Hall Construction Company gravel pits approximately six miles away. The
material was a clean, non-toxic product which met the standards of, and is used
by, the Colorado Department of Highways and Routt County for road construction
in the area. Compacting was done by a model 825-B Caterpillar compactor and
Ray-Go vibrating compactor.
During haul road construction, ten culverts (Map 8) were installed in
accordance with CMILRD stipulations to improve road stability while safely con-
veying the peak runoff from the 10-year, 24-hour storm event from the road
disturbed area. In 1978, Sun Coal Company, pursuant to Sun Coal Company's haul
road surface water runoff mitigatioh plan, installed ditch runouts with sediment
traps, constructed a Yampa River sedimentation pond, and repaired haul road
drainage ditches (see Tables 2.05.3-1, 2.05.3-2, and 2.05.3-3 for culvert and
runout calculations).
-165-
(Rev. 5/86)
