Live shrub clump transplant areas, when developed, will be established using methods similar <br />to those implemented at the Seneca II and Yoast Mines. Mature shrubs will be salvaged in <br />advance of topsoil stripping operations or from native shrub stands adjacent to the limit of <br />topsoil stripping. The shrub clump transplant area will be prepared by replacing slightly deeper <br />topsoil in the transplant area in order for a basin to be constructed that will retain sufficient <br />topsoil between graded spoil and the transplanted shrub clump. Following the first killing frost, <br />shrub clumps will be salvaged using front-end loaders or similar equipment and transported to <br />the transplant area. Once the shrub clump is placed in the basin, topsoil will be pushed and <br />compacted around each clump. Supplemental watering will follow placement of the shrub <br />clump and final topsoil shaping. <br />The live shrub clump transplant areas will vary from 1.0 to 1.5 acres in size and may be placed <br />in the vicinity of concentrated planting locations shown on Exhibit 22-1. The transplant area <br />may contain up to 100 individual shrub clumps per acre. Transplant areas will be sufficiently <br />spaced to maximize their use by wildlife. Alive shrub clump site has been established on <br />reclaimed lands in the NE'/. of Section 22. <br />Surface Stabilization Measures The planting of a cover crop will be the principal means of <br />surface stabilization during initial establishment of the perennial vegetative cover. Straw mulch <br />may be used in lieu of a cover crop. Where mulch will be used, the application rate will be <br />approximately one ton per acre. The straw will be anchored by mechanical crimping or tacked <br />with one of the various tackifying compounds available. Mechanical crimping operations will <br />be done on the contour whenever possible. Only clean grain straw that is free of noxious or <br />problem weeds will be used. Hydromulching has been discussed previously. <br />Reseeding of Prevously Seeded Areas All seeded areas will be periodically monitored for <br />success of perennial vegetation establishment. Soil Conservafion Service (SCSI technical <br />guides recommend that a minimum of two years should be allowed before declaring a stand a <br />failure. The heavy annual weed growth during the first, and sometimes second year, make it <br />somewhat difficult to determine the level of success li.e., adequate establishment of perennial <br />vegetationl. At any rate, reclamation experience at the Seneca 11 Mine shows that an initial <br />heavy weed growth indicates good site characteristics and adequate moisture for establishment <br />and development of the perennial vegetation. Monitoring at the Seneca II Mine shows that <br />adequate perennial vegetation cover is well established by the <br />30 Revised 08/07/96 <br />
