be applied if the seedbed is comprised of low fertility plant growth medium or parent material.
Normally, replaced topsoil materials will have adequate fertility. Tab 21, Minesoil
Reconstruction, details fertility sampling procedures which may be used to verify or adjust the
above general fertilization rate for hydroseeded steep slope areas.
Dozer tracking is included as an optional seeding method to be used on steep slopes where
conventional seeding equipment cannot be operated. If excessive track slippage occurs during
dozer tracking operations, the method will be discontinued at that site. The seed mix will be
broadcast either prior to dozer tracking or during the tracking operation. The site will then
either be hydromulched or straw mulched and anchored with a tackifying agent. Fertilization
considerations will be similar as that discussed above in hydroseeding.
Shrub and tree seedlings will be planted primarily by hand methods. Hand planting improves
opportunities for seedlings to be placed in available microsites and allows planting where site
conditions would restrict larger mechanical planting equipment. Hand planting equipment
includes planting hoes, spades, and bars, or portable planting augers. Mechanical seedling
planting will be considered as an optional planting method on sites which are not excessively
steep or rocky. Mechanical seedling planting will be conducted on the contour. Planting of
shrub and tree seedlings will be conducted primarily in the fall as dormant plantings. Spring
dormant plantings may be conducted if conditions permit.
29a Revised 06/17/96
