III I II I II I II IIII III Doc Date:12/11/2001
sss
5l~ 2.04.11 FISH AND WILDLIFE RESOURCE INFORMATION
The Meadows No. 1 mine permit area is located in Section 14, the eastern
portion of Sections 23 and 26 and the western portions of Sections 24 and 25,
all in Township 6 North, Range 87 West, Routt County, Colorado. This area is
contained in Game Management Unit No. 13. On initial permit application in
1976, Sun Coal Company requested and had received a Division of Wildlife
checklist of wildlife species to be found in Routt County. This checklist
(Appendix 2.04.11-1) was submitted as part of the application in February 1981.
The list indicates which species may utilize the habitat in the vicinity of the
permit area. Additionally, the Division provided a list of endangered and
threatened species for Colorado. This list does not constitute a wildlife sur-
vey for the mine area; instead, it indicates those wildlife species likely to
utilize the area on an annual basis.
• In July 1978, after the mine was in full operation, Jim Hicks, District
Wildlife Manager for the Division of Wildlife, visited the area and completed a
site specific "Wildlife Statement" listing species to be found, threatened or
endangered species, and various recommendations. The Company responded to each
of the recommendations by Mr. Hicks (Appendix 2.04.11-2 ).
Migration routes for big game have not been identified by the Colorado
Division of Wildlife, but the site is a winter concentration area for mule deer
and elk. Therefore, it is probable that these species migrate through the area
as well. Sand hill cranes may migrate through the area. It appears past mining
activities have not been noted to affect their migration activities.
No raptor nests were observed to occur on the site during a reconnaissance
field check. However, there is a bald eagle wintering area about three miles
northwest of the site, and there are two active golden eagle nests within three
- 133 - (Rev. 5/86)
