• 2 flight, 19 elk were observed adjacent to the proposed permit
boundary on the southeast facing bluffs in the E'~ of the SW's of
Section 18, TSN, B86W.
Walk transecta performed in August, 1980 revealed some elk
pellets, although no elk were seen. From these data it appears that
the proposed permit area receives limited use by elk. This is
further substantiated by eaamination of surface lands on II.S. Coal
Lease C-22676 located to the northwest and imediately adjacent to
the proposed permit area. The C-22676 area is similar habitat to
the proposed permit area. The IISDI-BLM (1979) environmental
assessment of C-22676 states that elk are occasionally found there
and the tract is considered to be within their winter range.
• However, the vegetation type is not considered to be preferred
habitat. Furthermore, there are no steep south facing elopes in the
proposed permit area which would be free of deep snow during
critical wintering periods. No critical winter range, calving areas
or migratiaa routes were identified in the proposed permit area.
Mule Deer. DSDI-FWS-0BS (1978) indicates the proposed permit
area is important to mule deer as winter range, with only a small
portion in Sectiana 1 and 2 T6N, B86W Listed as critical winter
range. No migration routes or fawning and production areas are
listed. CYCC's findings are somewhat in contrast. Aerial flights
an April 2, 1980 and May 30, 1980 revealed no mule deer on the
• proposed permit area and only one deer located adjacent to the
proposed permit boundary in the NWT of the NB'Z of Section 11 TSN,
2.04-95
