from bulk, relatively intact pieces of the above-described
materials. The average unit weight of the individual spoil
particles at !line No. 3 is 112 pounds per cubic foot (pcf). This
unit weight includes natural field moisture.
Bield Density Teats on Overburden
In order to evaluate the amount of bulking that would occur
when the overburden vas eacavated and lumped into loose piles, field
density testa were made at various locations on the mine site.
Specifically, large sand cone density teats were attempted at three
locations. These teats were performed by ezcavating a small hole in
the spoil pile and filling the hole with sand to determine the
volume of the hole. In addition to the sand cone procedure, nuclear
• moisture density testa were made using a neutron tranceiving gauge,
which can be eztended into the teat area 12 inches. The tea[ area
vas levelled and the teat was run by inserting the probe into the
ground in 2-inch increments and making a reading at each 2-inch
increment. Additionally, because of the influence of voids on a
nuclear test, the spoil teats were checked by rotating the nuclear
gauge 90 degrees and making four readings at each level. The
results of these testa are show below. The reported density is the
average of a aeries of readings for the nuclear gauge.
C~
2.04-30
