• Willimas Fork Formation and the top of the Iles Formation. The
oldest rock eapoeed in the area is the massive marine shale beneath
the Trout Creek Sandstone. The stratigraphic zone disturbed by
surface mining eatenda from a point approximately 80 feet above the
Wadge Seam down to the base of the Wadge Seam.
Teat borings and overburden sapling have been conducted within
the proposed permit area and have been utilized to satisfy the
requirements of Bule 2.04.6(1)(b). The results of the test borings
and overburden sampling are discussed below.
Location of Subsurface Water
The primary circulation medium for most exploratory bore holes
• drilled within the proposed permit area was compressed air, which
provides a rapid and reliable determination of the possible presence
of subsurface water. Certain drill holes penetrating the Wadge Sea
have been converted to piezometers for monitoring groundwater
conditions. Additional information on groundwater occurrence is set
forth under Bule 2.04.7.
Drill Hole Loge
Exhibit 1, Drill Hole Logs, contains numerous lithologic logs
which show and describe the lithologic characteristics and
thicknesses of each stratum and each coal seam. The location and
• elevation of each drill hole presented in Exhibit 1, Drill Hole Logs
are shown as Map 2, Mine No. 3 Geology.
2.04-28
