• Willimas Fork Formation and the top of the Iles Formation. The <br />oldest rock eapoeed in the area is the massive marine shale beneath <br />the Trout Creek Sandstone. The stratigraphic zone disturbed by <br />surface mining eatenda from a point approximately 80 feet above the <br />Wadge Seam down to the base of the Wadge Seam. <br />Teat borings and overburden sapling have been conducted within <br />the proposed permit area and have been utilized to satisfy the <br />requirements of Bule 2.04.6(1)(b). The results of the test borings <br />and overburden sampling are discussed below. <br />Location of Subsurface Water <br />The primary circulation medium for most exploratory bore holes <br />• drilled within the proposed permit area was compressed air, which <br />provides a rapid and reliable determination of the possible presence <br />of subsurface water. Certain drill holes penetrating the Wadge Sea <br />have been converted to piezometers for monitoring groundwater <br />conditions. Additional information on groundwater occurrence is set <br />forth under Bule 2.04.7. <br />Drill Hole Loge <br />Exhibit 1, Drill Hole Logs, contains numerous lithologic logs <br />which show and describe the lithologic characteristics and <br />thicknesses of each stratum and each coal seam.
