• Avifauna
Table 18, Species of Birds that Occur or are Likely to Occur on
Energy Mine No, 3 Study Area, lists the species of birds that are
likely to utlize the habitats present in the proposed permit area.
Included and noted in this listing are all avian species that were
observed during the field surveys. Avifauna populations of the
study area are discussed below by the following major categories:
Raptors, Game Birds, Waterfowl, and Songbirds.
Raptors. A total of 8 raptor species were observed during on-
site field studies by CYCC wildlife biologists during 1980. These
include: oae mature sad one immature bald eagle (Haliacetus
leucocephalus) which was seen soaring over the area, numerous
• American kestrel (Falco sparverius) and red-tailed hawk (Buteo
jamaicenais), Cooper's hawk (Accipiter cooperii), Swainson's hawk
(Buteo swainsoni), marsh hawk (Circus cyaneus), turkey vulture
(Cathartea aura), and long-eared owl (Aaio otus). The IISDI-FWS-OBS
(1978) does not list any golden eagle or bald eagle use for the
area. There were also four possible owl or hawk nests observed in
the vicinity of an aspen stand located along Connell ditch in the
Ng'Z Section 24 TSN, R86W,
IIpland Game Birds. The IISDI-FWS-0BS (1978) indicates use by
sage grouse and blue grouse in the proposed permit area but no
strutting, nesting, wintering or concentration areas were show for
• the proposed permit area or nearby adjacent areas. During on-site
surveys by CYCC wildlife biologists, no grouse were observed in the
2.04-97
