•
Surface water location DFSW-1 is located in the ephemeral stream channel approximately 100
feet south of monitoring well DFMW-1. Surface water location DFSW-2 is located on the north
bank of the St. Vrain River, west of the bridge on the Southwestern Portland Cement Company
entrance road. Surface water location DFSW-3 is located on the west bank of the St. Vrain
River, north of the bridge on North 63rd road. The monitoring wells and surface water locations
were approximately located by the field geologist on a topographic map and have not been
surveyed. DFSW-1 is upgradient of the mine site and downgradient of the Syntex chemical
landfill site. It is used to determine the quality of water flowing into the mine area in
intermittent drainages from the north. DFSW-2 is in the St. Vrain River upgradient of the mine
area. DFSW-3 is in the St. Vrain River downgradient of the mine area. These locations will
allow determination of water quality impacts on the St. Vrain River due to discharge from the
mine.
4.0 SAMPLING PROTOCOL
4.1 Monitorine Well Purein¢
• Before sampling each monitoring well, approximately three casing volumes were purged using
a stainless steel bailer and nylon rope. The following equation was used to determine the volume
of one casing:
V= (Db - Dw) x 0.163 gal/ft
Where: V= One casing volume (gallons)
Db =Total well depth (feet)
Dw =Depth to water (feet)
0.[63 =Conversion factor for 2-inch diameter casing
The total well depths and depths to water were measured from the tops of the well casings using
a Solinst water level indicator. Temperature and pH were measured and recorded after each
volume was purged. The pH was measured with a Hach pH meter, and the temperature with a
Taylor pocket thermometer. The purged water volumes were measured in a calibrated 5-gallon
bucket. Monitoring personnel wore disposable latex gloves during purging activities. Special cart
was taken to keep the bailer rope from coming in contact with the ground. Disposable plastic
was placed on the ground surface around each monitoring well.
Paoje~ N~m6c 79]-042
• ]uly 1S, 1980
Page 2
