• 1.0 SUMMARY OF SIGNIFICANT FINDINGS
Water quality analyses for both surface and ground water generally indicate background
conditions. No elevated concentrations of contaminants were detected with the exception oC trace
levels of certain volatile organics. These compounds were detected at concentrations below the
EPA practical quantitation limit (PQL), and may or may not be present in the ground water.
Inorganic analyses, including metals, revealed no constituents at levels that would be considered
above background. Major ions and other parameters are what could be considered normal. High
Total Suspended Solids results in the ground water monitor wells is probably due to very fine
grained sediments being drawn into the wells during purging (bailing). These wells will be
redeveloped to eliminate the effects of well construction on ground water quality.
2.0 INTRODUCTION
Western Technologies Inc. was retained by Southwestern Portland Cement Company to provide
quarterly baseline ground and surface water quality data at Dowe Flats for a Colorado Mined
Land Reclamation Board permit application. The first quarter sampling event was performed
on Friday, June 8, 1990. Evergreen Analytical, Inc., oC Wheat Ridge, Colorado provided
analytical laboratory services for most of the parameters. Boron and Turbidity were analyzed
• by Huffman Laboratories, Inc., of Golden, Colorado.
Water samples were collected Crom four monitoring wells and three surface water locations. Plate
1 contains a map of the monitoring locations. Table 1 contains a list of the baseline parameters
and the first quarter monitoring results. Copies of the chain of custody and laboratory results
are provided in Appendix A.
3.0 MONITORING LOCATIONS
Monitoring locations are shown on Plate 1. Monitoring well DFMW-1 is located in an ephemeral
stream channel near the northern boundary of the property and south of the St. Vrain Supply
Water Canal. Monitoring well DFMW-2 is located near the southwest corner of the site, between
Highway 66 and the Palmerton Ditch. Monitoring well DFMW-3 is located near the southeast
corner of the Garner Dairy, north of the Rough and Ready Ditch. Monitoring well DFMW-4 is
located near the southeast corner of the site, along the south bank of the Palmerton Ditch, south
of the Hall Farm. DFMW-1 is upgradient oC the mine site and serves as the background well for
the shallow alluvial aquifer. DFMW-2, 3 and 4 are downgradient of the mine site.
u
