Once mining is complete, drainage
from the quarry will commence when water has filled the existing workings up to the lowest
possible exit elevation. This is anticipated to be the tunnel driven by CYMC in 1990. Water
from this source will be piped to the sediment control structure at the toe of the waste pile from
which it will flow into Yule Creek. Maximum flow during spring runoff is estimated at 20 gpm
(pumping to reduce the level of water in the quarry during spring runoffhas never exceeded 33
gpm). A 4-inch drainage pipe with an intake screen will be placed in the tunnel, under the access
road, and down to the sediment control structure. The pipe will be placed before the tunnel is
backfilled so that water will drain and not allow a buildup of pressure behind the backfill in the
tunnel. The pipe will be placed with a slight down slope so that ice will not form in the pipe to
block it.
The sediment control structure at the toe of the waste pile will remain after mining is
complete. It is anticipated the pond will be cleaned out as needed during operations, and upon
completion of operations. A second cleanout is scheduled for two yeazs after completion of
operations. The experience of former employees of CYMC indicates that very little sediment
26
