Box 1670
Cnanby, CO 80046
Dear Mr. ICattenberg:
L0~~0
~~~~
~'p OF
For ~Idlife-
FarPeople
We have reviewed your apgfication for a Special Use Permit for a sand and aggregate pit east of Granby,
Colorado and have the foDowing comments.
The Colorado Division of Wildlife does own the property to We southea~ of the proposed pit. This
property was acquired in 1999 for the preservation of wildh'fe habitat. The primary use by wt7dlife is
wintering. elk and deer as well as aumme. habitat for a variety of species. Winter habitat in Grand County
is limited, especially in light ofthe rapid devehrpmeat of adjacent lands. The CROW acquired this
property to provide big game winter range, alleviate game damage and financial i~aas on adjacent
agicnhural producers.
With that in mind we are concerned with several items as it relates to the proposed activity at the pit.
1. Operating season- it is very important to avoid disturbance to the wintering area from mid November
thm Apn7 each year. Wiq the pit be closed in the wing'!
2. Noise and dust abatement affecting those species which use the area in the summer for fawning and
e1~_nae habitat.
3. Trespass on CROW lands. This parcel is closed to human activity from November 1 S thru April 1 S
each year. A project has been requested to fimce the parcel, but @ has not been done to date.
There is also more use by wr7dhfi; of ffie projected pit than identified in your proposal While it is coma
that b'vds, inchtd'mg raptors, and rodents ase the pmpesty. Large ungulates, especially doer and ells {up
to 1000, have been sees foraging and waving throagh the property to the hay meadow to the west.
We note that you have a noxious weed plan and would ~cottrsge use ofnative grasses, fortes and
shrubs. The straw sediment 5hers shonhi be certified weed 6+ee. Early detection and treatment is essential
for both your property and the State of Colorado's.
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL ~.
