5/~ r/~~Dh L • ~ ~ ~1~ Y~S / III I II I II I II IIII III Doc Date:12/11/2001
2.04.3 Site Description and Land Use Information
• The Raton Creek Mine property is located approximately 3 miles south of Trinidad and
east of Interstate Highway 25. This part of the Trinidad coal field is south of the
Pergatoire River and east of Raton Creek. The area is a well dissected table land where
most of the flat uplands have been removed by erosion so that it appeals mountainous.
Two or three miles to the south is Fishers Plateau which has a flat upper surface at and
elevation of 9600 feet. Trinidad lies at and elevation of about 6000 feet. Elevations on the
permit area range from 6300 to 7600 feet and the more important coal seams outcrop
elevations between 6380 and 6500 feet. Regionally, elevations gradually increase from
north to south.
In the flatter areas of the region, a thick sandy soil cover exists. Where slopes are
significant, bedrock is exposed. However, the softer units aze usually draped with a
veneer of earth and only the harder units are hazed. Coal outcrops are usually blanketed
but a dazk grey soil often reveals its location.
Map No. 2, Animas Mine Project Land Use, shows the existing land use and the known
• portals of previous mining. 'The extent of the Raton Creek Mines, previous mining, and
surface areas disturbed by previous mining is shown on Map No. 6, Raton Creek Mine
Map. With the exception of Raton Creek No. 2 Mine portal area, almost the entire
surface disturbance azea for the Raton Creek Mines has been previously disturbed by past
(pre-law) mining but was never reclaimed.
The first rewrded mine production in the vicinity of the Raton Creek Mines was from the
EI Moro (or Engleville) 1, 2, and 3 coal mines operating on the Starkville Seam from
1883 to 1892. Other mines had operated in the area prior to 1883 but their production was
never recorded with Colorado Division of Mines. Since 1883, 29 mines have operated
within or just adjacent to the permit area. Table 1, Coal Mines Located Within the Raton
Creek Interest Area, presents a list of the major mines (excluding Raton Creek), their
dates of operation, seam name and thickness, and known mine life production.

33 Rcvised: 1/27/98
iofiaorRedsioa-p2'S
~N-o3 ~-~~ 9~
