METHODS AND MATERIALS
•~
Electrofishing was conducted in a portion of the Williams Fork
River located approximately 0.5 miles from the confluence with the Yampa
River using a Coffelt Backpack Shocker (Model BP-1). Two transects were
established is relation to the coal silo. The upstream transect. included
the portion of the river from the silo to approximately 300 yards up-
stream, while the downstream transect ranged between the silo and Coal
Road Bridge about 700 yards in length. One person held the electrodes
and walked upstream, while two people trailed behind and netted fish.
Each transect was shocked in 75- 100-yard sections,-which included bath
shorelines. The total time of electrofishing for the upstream and
downstream transects was 80 minutes each. Since various sectioas did
not exhibit data were
difference catches oresented for the encir.e tran-
, •~
sect. Fish captured along each transect were placed in a large cor.•
tainer. Lengths and weights were taken for ;,11 fish except minnows.
Important fish, such as salmonid (trout) species, were weighed and
measured immediately after collection to reduce chances of mortality.
~J
2
