INTRODUCTION
A benthic macroinvertebrate survey was conducted on September 12,

1979 in the lower portion of the Williams Fork River near the site of a
proposed coal silo for Empire Energy Corporation. Ia compliance with
federal regulations governed by the Office of Surface Mining (OSM),
information describing important terrestrial and aquatic flora and fauna
is the vicinity of the silo must be submitted with [he permit appLi-
cation. Benthic macroinvertebrates usually are identified as an impor-
tant component of an aquatic ecosystem is terms of the role in bioenerge-
tics and possible indicators of water quality conditions. Since no
benthic macoinvertebrate data exist for the lower portion of the Williams
Fork River, the purpose of the survey is to provide initial information
on numbers and species composition of macroinvertebrates near the oro-
posed coal silo.
1
