2.04.9 Soil Resource Information
• Soils found in the permit area are delineated on the Soils Map (Map 4}.
Site specific soil work has been completed by the United States
Department of Agriculture, Soil Conservation Service ("SCS"), on the
permit and adjacent areas. The mapping intensity utilized by the SCS
was the Order 2 sampling intensity.
The SCS Order 2 survey for the permit area was conducted over the entire
permit area. However, the Bear Coal Company does not plan to disturb
soils in any other area other than the area of surface facilities.
Therefore, the Bear Coal Company subsequently conducted a detailed site
specific soil survey. This additional soil work was conducted during
the fall of 1981. The purpose of this data gathering program was to
develop additional information to confirm and complement the Order 2
soil survey conducted by the SCS. The SCS survey was reviewed for field
precision within the area to be affected by the facilities of the Bear
• Coal Company. Soil cores were taken through the topsoil. The soil
samples were visually logged in the field. Two soil samples were saved
and tested by Bookcliffs Commercial Laboratories in Steamboat Springs,
Colorado for chemical and physical analysis. The holes sampled in the
fall of 1981 were also used to determine soil thicknesses.
As suggested by representatives of the Division, the accepted methods of
soil analysis as set forth in Wyoming Guideline No. 1 were employed for
all soils analysis. Also, as suggested by the Colorado Mined land
Reclamation Division, the soil samples were tested for pH, electrical
conductivity, saturation percentage, particle size analysis, soluble
calcium, magnesium, sodium, and sodium absorption ratio. As shown on
the Soils Map (Map 4), several soil mapping units are found within the
proposed permit boundary. These mapping units are as follows:
1) Absarokee-Work Loam
2) 8eenom-Absarokee Association
• 3) Breece Loam
2.04-39
