BOX 1090
GUNNISON, COLORADO 81230
January 23, 1984
iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
999
RECEIVED
Marv z s ~9s~
Mr. Rocky Beaver
Mined Land Reclamation Board
Room 423
1313 Sherman Street
Denver, CO 50203
Dear Mr. Seaver:
MINED LAND RECLAMATION D1VISi0N
Colo. Dept. of Natural Resources
After review of the supplemental information to MLRB File No. 78-305
from Formaz and Son, Inc., Gunnison, Colorado we wish to make the following
comments in regard to the application for mining and reclamation permits
within Curecanti National Recreation Area (see map):
1. In order to help maintain the visual aesthetics of the drive
along U.S. 50, we would like to have the southern rimrock barrier
along U.S. 50 preserved as it is presently. We will meet in Che
future with the operators regarding this point (see preliminary
survey map enclosed).
2. We will also be working with the operators in the near future with
regard to a NPS permit formalizing the methods and rights of ingress
and egress from the area and other aspects of the mining impacts
upon the surface areas and adjacent lands. Among these are assistance
in securing the appropriate archeological clearances in compliance
with Federal Executive Order No. 11593, Sec. lOb.
3. We concur with the Colorado Division of Wildlife's assessment of the
area providing critical winter range for not only deer, but elk
during severe winters such as the present. 'T'his year approximately
200 elk and 100 deer are utilizing the project location and neigh-
boring rangeland. The rim rock previously mentioned and old snags
below provide important perches for bald eagles during winter months
and other raptor species throughout the year.
4. We would also like to be included in the bond release request consul-
tation for the various phases of reclamation.
There is little question that the Federal surface managed by the National
Park Service is being mined, or that the land was acquired subject to a
~ '
