- -3-
•
~~
-~ bet~~een 20 and 30 feet. A 3 foot high earthen safety berm or guard rail
is to be constructed on the downhill side of the road, The design life
of the road is about 5 years.
INVESTIGATION
-- Site conditions were observed during a reconnaissance of conditions
exposed in cuts made for County Road lOR and the existing haul road.
..
Conditions exposed consisted of 0 to 5 feet of overburdened soils
C underlain by bedrock of the Mancos Formation. This Cretaceone Age
formation consisted predominantly of claystone shale. Along most of the
~;
•• alignment the upper bedrock is weathered and, in some areas, has
weathered to a residual soil.
Bedding planes as well as major and minor joint sets were mapped as
1 part of the investigation. Measurements indicate that the bedding
planes strike due north and dip at about 40 degrees to the west over the
-~ area of proposed construction. Two sets of steeply dipping joints were
P
L also observed and mapped, The major joint set strikes north 71 degrees
east and dips approximately 85 degrees to the southeast. The average

spacing between joints is about 2 feet. A minor joint set, which was
less continuous, strikes north 26 degrees east and dips to the southeast

at about 76 degrees. Joints were spaced at about 1 foot.
The ground surface along the proposed alignment slopes between 1.5:1
and 4;1 (horizontal to vertical). The steeper slopes are generally
east-facing. Manmade fill slopes on the adjacent County Road and the
existing haul road appeared to be stable at slooe ratios of about
c
