1

' ABSTRACT
' Between July 21 and July 24, 1981, personnel from Nickens
and Associates, Montrose, Colorado, conducted a cultural resource
inventory for Ute Engineering and Survey Company of Delta,
t Colorado, and the Grand Mesa Coal Company. The project area is
located approximately three miles northwest of Cedaredge, Colorado.
Two types of survey techniques were employed: First, a 100q survey
was required in areas to be affected by a refuse pile and sediment
pond; and second, a 10~ sample survey was conducted on approximately
680 acres of possible subsidence areas north and west of the Red
Canyon Mine. Two aboriginal lithic scatters and five isolated finds
' were discovered and recorded. The t~•io lithic scatters are not
considered to be eligible for nomination to the National Register
of Historic Places, but they should be avoided and/or protected
' from any type of mining related activity. Since no cultural sites
were located in the proposed refuse pile and sediment pond areas,
it is recommended that archaeological clearance be granted for
' these areas.

1
1
