• •
PCB TRANSPORTATION AND DISPDSA
Proper transportation of PCBs depends on the quantity involved.
- Small 1-ounce vials of possibly contaminated transformer oil
' should be packaged and sent as outlined in the Testing section of
this manual. No labels as to the content should be placed on the
outside of the package.
Transportation of PCBs or PCB materials should be done in a
non-leaking container and the container must be labeled with the
proper PCB warning labels. Container specifications are listed
in the EPA regulations under Annex 3, 761.42(6). Assure that any
containers used to store or transport PCBs or PCB-contaminated
oils, indicates that the appropriate specifications have been
met,
To transport PCBs or PCB-contaminated materials for disposal,.
contact either the disposer, the nearest EPA regional office,
or your state environmental agency for recommendations for a
~, hazardous waste hauler who meets the appropriate criteria for
transportation of PCBs.
Appropriate disposal methods are described in the PCB regula-
tions. Figure 1 displays the hazardous waste landfill sites
approved by EPA for PCB disposal and the types of equipment and
materials each will accept. Please note that large capacitors
can no longer be disposed in a hazardous waste landfill. Fig-
ure 2 lists 'the approved incinerators for disposal of large
PCB capacitors, and other PCB liquids and solids.
File all disposal documentation of PCB and PCB-contaminated items
in this section of the manual. Separate subsections for PCB and
PCB-contaminated items may be useful. The retention of these
disposal certification/receipts are the only wav to verify that
disposal has been done properly. It should be noted that UII
~~ and PMC responsibility does not end when the equipment is handed
over for disposal. If storage or disposal is done improperly,
UII and PMC are responsible.
Original, 70/20/80
Revision U1, 3/23/81
