n
U
In accordance with the Mined Land Reclamation Division's
"Guidelines for Compliance with Land Use and Vegetation
Requirements of the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board for Coal
Mining, October, 1988", a minimum of 10 samples were collected in
the two reference areas while at least 15 samples were taken in the
three major community disturbed areas. Samples were collected in
each area until sample adequacy was reached or to a maximum of 50
samples, whichever was less. In the case of reference areas, woody
stem density samples were collected to sample adequacy or to a
maximum of 35 samples as was agreed to by the Division. Woody
plant density began in late AprilJearly May while cover and
production sampling began in early June.
Total Vegetative Cover:
• Total vegetative cover was sampled using an optical point
frame developed by Esco Associates. Point sitings were located
along a 50 meter transect stretched out from the sample point
location in a direction as described above. The 50 points per
transect (one point at each one meter interval) comprise a single
sample unit. Cover was identified by species, or as rock, litter,
or bare ground. For the purposes of estimating the total
vegetative cover, only first hit data were collected. species
composition and diversity was determined from cover data.
Woody Plant Density:
Woody plant density was estimated using elongated quadrats.
4 -
u
